‘The Wrath of Becky’ Review: Teenage Riot

Published: May 25, 2023

Continuing the vigilante adventures of its teen-drifter namesake (Lulu Wilson), “The Wrath of Becky” (a sequel to “Becky” in 2020) finds her as soon as once more doing battle with far-right knuckle-draggers.

It has been two years since neo-Nazis killed her father, and Becky and her canine companion, Diego, have burned by means of a number of foster households earlier than washing up within the dwelling of the kindly Elena (Denise Burse). Now 16, Becky works as a diner waitress, performs Scrabble with Elena and fantasizes about slicing the throat of a sexist buyer. All she wants is an inciting incident, and right here, on cue, come the Noble Men, a clump of white supremacists and would-be insurrectionists, who violently assault Elena and make off with Diego. If “John Wick” taught us something, it’s by no means, ever hurt the canine.

Directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, “The Wrath of Becky” follows the rote rhythms of the revenge thriller as Becky, carried out up in crimson boiler swimsuit and blue nails, follows the lads to a comfy farmhouse and eavesdrops on their racist plans. The subsequent slaughters are creative, the pacing energetic and the cat-and-mouse construction entertaining; however the rodents themselves are — other than their suave chief, performed by Seann William Scott — such misogynistic morons that Becky’s predominance is rarely doubtful.

Considering the present swarming of teams like this, “The Wrath of Becky” ought to not less than have given us chills. But the film’s nearly jokey remedy of its slobbering incels, mixed with Becky’s comedian posturings, hemorrhage the stress. Wilson, nonetheless, is persistently terrific, and deserves extra considerate materials. If there’s to be a 3rd movie, the ending of this one suggests she may get it.
